My First Consignment Selling Experience

After our garage sale a few weeks ago, I took my expensive J. Crew dress that didn’t sell to Plato’s Closet, a franchise that buys and sells name brand clothing. I realized they mostly stock teen clothes, but J. Crew was on their list of brands they buy, so I figured I’d have no problem selling this dress.

Man, was I wrong! They said they couldn’t buy it because it was too “mature” and “linen isn’t selling very well right now.”

I felt like a 60-year-old lady! But I guess not dressing like a teenager anymore is a good thing, right?

(Just a side note - I think this picture might actually be the back of the dress)

Update: Here is the front of the dress. I think I’m going to list it on eBay.

Lol! Bah…what do teenagers know about fashion anyway… ;-)

Its really cute though, what size is it and how much were you trying to sell it for?

I think it is a size 8 (possibly 6? I’d have to check to be sure). It was around $150 retail at J. Crew about two summers ago - I think I bought it for somewhere between $80-$120. I tried to sell it on Craigslist for $40, and at the garage sale for $25 with no success. I never wore it because I didn’t have any shoes that looked good with it and the fit was a little weird on me in the back - like I was a little too tall for it or something. I would have taken whatever the consignment store would have given me for it! Alas, now it is folded up in the back seat of my car…

    (a) I agree that the dress is beautiful

    (b) I was going to suggest eBay… but before I do, could you e-mail me a picture of the front? You may have found a buyer in me!

Yeah…Plato’s closet is for the birds. Unless it’s within a year of the purchase date, and in perfect condition, they won’t even consider it. My sister has had GREAT luck with things even a few years old at TurnStyle - I know they have locations in Minnesota, not sure if they are a chain.

Good luck - it’s a beautiful dress & should sell for more than $25!!! Especially since it’s NEW!
