Oh, the Irony (and Why I Really Need to Get Out of Debt!)
Six years ago:
I graduated from one of the country’s top journalism schools with a degree in advertising…
I had held part-time jobs and internships in marketing, graphic design and public relations, where my duties included writing copy for websites and designing ads…
I was accepted into a well-regarded advertising portfolio school in Atlanta with hopes of becoming an art director…
I began a graphic design program at a highly-regarded art school…
Today:
I’m an analyst who was lucky enough to sit in on the meeting discussing our small company’s new logo and website, which is being designed and written by friends and family members of my bosses…
This was not a good day.

Oh, I so get it. That stinks, and that is the way of things, isn’t it? Hang in there.
Why don’t you offer your services on a free-lance basis? Remind or advise your boss of your credentials and show them your portfolio or any examples you might have. Nothing ventured….
Yes, that’s essentially what I’m trying to do. I’m working on getting up a website of my portfolio to get more freelance work.
I had been trying to play down the whole design/writing thing at my work in the past because I don’t want them to think I’m unhappy or going to leave, but I don’t think they realize my experience/skill in these things at all! So it is partially my own doing.
I feel it’s too late to get involved in the whole logo/website thing at this point, but I’m definitely going to suggest they let me come up with some ideas for the tagline and approach them about my desire to do this type of thing in my next review.
