Ha! I know what you mean. Waiters are lucky to get a 10% tip from my dad. He also used to make us share drinks and fries at McDonald's instead of letting us each get our own value meal.

My mom is pretty clueless about finances because my dad pays all the bills and has never involved her in anything - probably another reason she overspends.

I'm a combination of both. I'll have my stepson make birthday cards because I can't justify spending $3.99 at Hallmark, but then I'll go buy a pair of $100 shoes.

this is seriously close to my own experiences with money growing up - and my mom was right, my dad was occasionally clueless about money (if i asked him for cash to go to a movie, he would give me $2. he was 10 years older than my mom and may have actually been under the impression that, in 1995, $2 was a PILE of movie money!! he also still undertips - my family all loiters around 'til he leaves the restaurant first, and then we all throw cash on the table and flee...), but in general, i now know that my dad was a bit of a tightwad because my mom was a chronic over-spender. i HAVE to do better...
